Fabrics are often sold online with a weight indicator- either grams per meter squared (g/m²) or ounces per yard squared (oz/yd²). It’s useful to understand these weights when purchasing fabric online for a particular project.
Fabric Weight Calculations

Width of fabric weighed
Length of fabric weighed
Multiply the length by the width of the fabric to find the area in sq cm or inches.
Divide the weight of the fabric by the area to find the weight per square cm or inch.
Multiply to find the weight per square meter or yard.
